Description: “Source Water” in Nevada means an untreated source of water used to supply drinking water to the general public. For example, “source water” is groundwater before it is pumped out by a well and surface water flowing to or in the Truckee River before it is diverted to one of Truckee Meadows Water Authority (TMWA) treatment plants. “Critical Source Water Protection Area” represents the land surrounding an individual well or stream where the water quality is potentially most vulnerable to contamination from human activities. Within this area, contaminated ground or surface water is more likely to reach the drinking water supply system. Consequently, the community or public water systems (PWS) can focus on this area to develop specific management strategies that will protect their water supply from becoming contaminated.
“Critical Source Water Protection Area” represents the land surrounding a well or stream where the water quality is potentially more vulnerable to contamination from human activities and where the community may adopt strategies to protect the quality of their drinking water supply source.

Within this boundary, education, monitoring, and land use planning can provide more comprehensive management of surface water and groundwater resources. These boundaries encompass aquifers and surface waters more broadly vulnerable to human activity in the region.

Description: “Watersheds in Washoe County (HUC-12)” represent a geographic basis to discuss community source water and water quality. They are described by tributary name and Hydrologic Unit Code 12 or “HUC-12”. The U.S. Geological Survey developed this system to describe watershed extent because it provides stakeholders, for example the U.S. Forest Service, the Natural Resource Conservation Service, and the Nevada Division of Forestry, with a common language to share information. The hydrologic unit hierarchy is indicated by the number of digits in groups of two (such as HUC 2, HUC 4, and HUC 6) within the HUC code. HUC 4 represents the subregion level, delineating large river basins. HUC 8 maps the subbasin level, analogous to medium-sized river basins; and HUC 12 is a more local sub-watershed level that captures tributary systems.

Description: “Watersheds Tributary to the Truckee River” represents tributary watersheds to the segment of the Truckee Meadows flowing through the greater Reno/Sparks area (between the California/Nevada state line and roughly Vista Boulevard). Streams in these watersheds contribute directly, or indirectly through groundwater recharge, to source water for public water systems in the Truckee Meadows and Washoe Valley. These watershed areas are evaluated by HUC-12 the "2020 Source Water and 319(h) Watershed Management Plan for Public Water Systems in Washoe County and the Truckee River through the Truckee Meadows".

Description: “Groundwater Basins” represent a geographic basis to discuss groundwater quality and quantity in Nevada. Groundwater is an important source of drinking water stored in the earth beneath our feet, in spaces between sand, soils, and fractured rock known as an aquifer. Layers of aquifers make up a groundwater basin. The groundwater basin boundaries have been defined by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Nevada Division of Water Resources. These boundaries, provided by the Western Regional Water Commission, for Washoe County are slightly modified for local water planning and management purposes.

Description: “Irrigation Ditches” represents the historic network of ditches created to convey and distribute Truckee River water through the Truckee Meadows. The ditch system is still used for irrigation, hydroelectric power generation, and diversion of Truckee River for drinking water to the Truckee Meadows Water Authority.

Description: “Parcels with Septic Systems” represents properties listed by the Washoe County Assessor as having on-site septic systems for sewage disposal rather than being connected to a regional wastewater collection and treatment system. Areas with high densities of septic systems are a concern for groundwater quality.
